Top seeds advance to semi-finals

The 2023 ProAir British Junior Championships (BJC) quarter-finals took place in Sheffield today as the cream of British and Irish talent fought to secure a place in the tournament’s semi-finals.

Today’s action was led by the top seeds across all age categories, with each No.1 seed progressing to the last four.

No.1 seed Jonah Bryant (Sussex) remains in contention for a third BJC title as he beat 9/12 seed Ioan Sharpe (Wales) in the Boys U19s category.

Meanwhile, 5/8 seed Alex Broadbridge (Hants) progressed after No.2 seed Yusuf Sheikh (Essex) retired injured two games ahead.

5/8 seed Bailey Malik (Sussex) upset 3/4 seed Caleb Boy (Kent) in straight games to earn a place in the semi-finals to face Bryant.

In the other Boys U19s quarter-final, 3/4 seed Abd-Allah Eissa (Warwicks) recorded a 3-0 win over 9/12 seed Cory Harding (Mersey).

5/8 seed Mariam Eissa (Warwicks) pulled off the only upset of the Girls U19s event as she defeated 3/4 Meha Shah (Warwicks) 3-0.

Top seed and two-time U17 BJC champion Amelie Haworth (Hants) won in straight games against 5/8 seed Natalie Main (Scotland) and remains on course to capture her third consecutive title.

No.2 seed Ellie Breach (Wales) and 3/4 seed Robyn McAlpine (Scotland) won both their matches in three games, knocking out 9/12 seed Megan Light (Hants) and 5/8 seed Francesca Hall (Yorks) respectively.

The Boys U17s quarter-finals saw all but one match go to seeding. 5/8 seed Harry Bloomfield (Glos) beat last year’s U15 winner 3/4 seed Ronny Hickling (Surrey) in five games to set up a semi-final clash against No.2 seed Archie Turnbull (Wales). Turnbull dispatched 5/8 seed Michael Chak (Surrey) in straight games.

Elsewhere, top seed Dylan Roberts (Kent) won comfortably and set up a last four encounter with 3/4 seed Ismail Khalil (Warwicks). Khalil came back from behind twice against 5/8 seed Owen Hendricks (Surrey) to win 3-2.

Top seed Emily Coulcher-Porter (Oxon) progressed via walkover in the Girls U17s event. Meanwhile. No.2 seed Elizabeth Dicker (Hants) along with 3/4 seeds Louisa Kaven (Scotland) and Millie Breach (Wales) all won in straight games to book their semi-final places.

Both 3/4 seeds George Baker (Yorks) and Samuel Cross (Warwicks) were knocked out of their Boys U15s quarter-final matches by 5/8 seed Ali Khalil (Warwicks) and 9/12 seed Murdo Mackenzie (Scotland). Meanwhile, top seed Luke McBride and No.2 seed Gabriel Chak (Surrey) both won to advance to the semi-finals.

There were two walkovers in the Girls U15 quarter-final matches as No.1 seed Reka Kemecsei (Sussex) and 5/8 seed Nia Seren Thomas (Wales) progressed over their respective opponents in 5/8 seed Zoe Yeomans (Ireland) and 3/4 seed Ameerah Ismail (Warwicks).

Elsewhere, 5/8 seed Fearne Copley (Yorks) upset 3/4 seed Reneta Colabella (Kent) 3-1. No.2 seed Harriet Broadbridge (Hants) defeated 5/8 seed Ava Fox (Norfolk) in straight games.

5/8 seed Oscar Brown (Leics) was the only player to cause an upset in the Boys U13s as he joined No.1 seed Thomas Myers (Scotland), 2nd seed Joe Thompson (Yorks) and 5/8 seed Joshua Fillmore (Cambs) in the semi-finals.

The Girls U13s quarter-finals went according to seeding as No.1 seed Phoebe Griffiths (Hants), No.2 seed Esther Chak (Surrey) and 3/4 seeds Madalena Sidoli (Wales) and Bella Gokani (Leics) progressed through to the semi-finals.
